Personality:
❝ I believe that moe is an essential factor. ❞
When you first see Mikuru Asahina, there should be no doubt in anyone’s mind that she’s the epitome of moe. After all, she’s a petite girl who can pass as both a middle schooler and a high schooler (though she’s playing the role of a high schooler), has a huge rack, and is loved by many all over North High. And that’s practically the reason why she was chosen by Haruhi Suzumiya to become the SOS Brigade’s mascot, something that is completely necessary for Haruhi’s merry brigade. However, even though these are traits of this young girl, that’s not all that there is to her. In fact, that’s only just the beginning.
A huge contributing factor to Mikuru’s personality is the mere fact that she cannot be considered as an ordinary human. Sure, she may not have any supernatural abilities, but Mikuru Asahina is a time traveller; a girl from the future who was sent to this time plane to observe Haruhi Suzumiya. And the reason for observing Haruhi? It’s because Haruhi caused a huge timequake that closed the door to any timeplanes that go further than four years ago.
Why is being a time traveler so relevant to Mikuru’s personality, though? The answer is simple. It’s all due to the fact that not only is she not allowed to disobey or get detailed information about her missions (i.e The Melancholy of Mikuru Asahina, where she says, “Um, I wish that they would tell me too. But it’s no good. They won’t tell me anything.”) she’s also hypnotized to say the words “classified information” whenever, well, classified information is trying to be said, which makes her sentences into a huge, bumbling mess.❝ That's what's so pathetic. I'm just... I can't do anything. They won't let me understand anything. ❞
Even though most of the time, this shy, awkward girl tries to do her best - obeying and pleasing Haruhi, keeping her identity a secret, obeying her superiors - this girl from the future at times feels conflicted, confused, and even ultimately useless. She just does what she's told without knowing anything about what she's doing; almost as if the blind were leading the blind.
Though in both cases, they're both Mikuru Asahina.❝ I've decided that she is. Mikuru's my toy! ❞
Mikuru, to Haruhi, is considered as an important mascot character and sometimes even her 'toy' or 'dress-up doll'. Though Mikuru does scream and complain (even though it's never successful), Mikuru can be brave and tries her best to deal with the present day as it is. She knows that unlike Nagato with her "bogus magic" and Koizumi with his esper powers, she herself is weak and an ordinary human girl who can only do what she's told and help out in the little ways.
Another thing to note is that Mikuru absolutely adores anything or anyone that's cute. Two good examples are Satonaka's dog, Rousseau, as well as Yasumi. In fact, she even lights up at the sight of these two, just wanting to hug them. Really.❝ My 'interpretation' is different from Koizumi-kun's.
It's true that Suzumiya-san has the power to alter the present.
However, I don't believe she's changing the structure of the world.
The world was like this to begin with. It wasn't created by Suzumiya-san. ❞
This is the theory that Mikuru's group of time travelers believe in; a theory that contradicts Koizumi Itsuki's - the esper of the brigade - theory that Haruhi is some sort of 'god' who created the world in a day. Of course, even though she has different beliefs than Koizumi, and possibly even Nagato, too, she does not hate them as people.
And though Mikuru does not hate Nagato (nor does she hate anyone else, for she has not an evil bone in her body), the time traveller does feel quite awkward around Nagato for two reasons. One is the fact that she thinks Nagato is always watching her. And the second is that she herself feels that Nagato is jealous of her and she wants to be like her.
Nevertheless, even though she's treated as a 'toy' by Haruhi and told to do thing without knowing what they are and many other things, Mikuru Asahina truly is a gentle soul who can warm a person's hear with just a single cup of tea.

"Ah—"
The young petite girl opened her eyes, wide in surprise as a white cloud of air escaped her lips as she spoke. But soon enough, her body realized that the temperature had dropped like a rock, which caused her to hug her shoulders, shivering in the cold.
Mikuru Asahina - for that was her name - soon took a glance around at her surroundings. The place was a beautiful, peaceful forest filled with snow. However, she could not enjoy the view because there were several things that were lingering in her mind.
Where am I? When am I?
As she patted herself down, she frantically did the first logical thing to do when in an emergency crisis. Check to see if she can contact her superiors.
One second passed by. Then two. Then even three.
Yet, nothing happened. There was no reply, and she couldn't even contact them at all whatsoever. Soon enough, tears started falling out of her eyes, as she wailed at the skies above her, completely conflicted. Was the reason why they said nothing because of her?
Because she was a failure?
No, she thought to herself, shaking her head furiously as she slowly wiped the tears from her wet eyes, forcing herself to be brave. It was difficult, but she knew that she had to do it. This was just like before. She couldn't contact them, she could use her TPPD, either.
So she would have to find out the truth herself. Even though she didn't know how she got here, where she was, or what time it was, she knew she had to move on.
There were people who she cared about... and people who cared about her that needed her, after all. If she didn't get back, she knew that something horrible would happen! She didn't want that.
Which is why the girl decided to brace the cold and carry on to find out the truth.
